{"id":1259,"date":"2009-12-08T19:58:22","date_gmt":"2009-12-08T18:58:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.multimedialab.be\/blog\/?p=1259"},"modified":"2018-11-23T10:25:36","modified_gmt":"2018-11-23T09:25:36","slug":"christian-marclay-guitar-drag-1999","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.multimedialab.be\/blog\/?p=1259","title":{"rendered":"Christian Marclay : Guitar Drag (2000)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Une performance sonore hant\u00c3\u00a9e par un \u00c3\u00a9pisode particuli\u00c3\u00a8rement sinistre.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image2010\" src=\"http:\/\/www.multimedialab.be\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/christian_marclay_index.jpg\" alt=\"Christian Marclay\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Une Fender Stratocaster branch\u00c3\u00a9e est attach\u00c3\u00a9e \u00c3\u00a0 une corde, puis tra\u00c3\u00aen\u00c3\u00a9e derri\u00c3\u00a8re un pick-up truck.<\/p>\n<p>Diffus\u00c3\u00a9 par un ampli puissant, la longue plainte \u00c3\u00a9lectrique de cette <em>solid body<\/em> enregistr\u00c3\u00a9e par <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubu.com\/sound\/marclay.html\" target=\"_blank\">Christian Marclay<\/a> peut probablement \u00c3\u00a9voquer les c\u00c3\u00a9l\u00c3\u00a8bres rituels de destructions d&rsquo;instruments par <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pete_Townshend\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Townshend<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kurt_Cobain\" target=\"_blank\">Kurt Cobain<\/a> ou encore <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fluxus\" target=\"_blank\">Fluxus<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nam_June_Paik\" target=\"_blank\">Nam June Paik<\/a> : Violin to be Dragged on the Street, 1961-1975).<\/p>\n<p>L\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c5\u201cuvre \u00c3\u00a9voque \u00c3\u00a9galement le dramatique lynchage de <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Byrd,_Jr.\" target=\"_blank\">James Byrd Jr<\/a>, afro-am\u00c3\u00a9ricain tra\u00c3\u00aen\u00c3\u00a9 sur plusieurs kilom\u00c3\u00a8tres par un camion, dans la petite ville de Jasper, Texas en 1998. Un an apr\u00c3\u00a8s cet acte terrifiant et barbare, on peut en effet imaginer que Christian Marclay (alors en r\u00c3\u00a9sidence \u00c3\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artpace.org\/artists_and_curators\/christian-marclay\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ArtPace<\/a>, San Antonio, Texas) a voulu donner \u00c3\u00a0 l&rsquo;agonie path\u00c3\u00a9tique de cette guitare une dimension politique.<\/p>\n<p>Comme il l&rsquo;explique lui-m\u00c3\u00aame :<br \/>\nGuitar Drag poss\u00c3\u00a8de de nombreuses couches de r\u00c3\u00a9f\u00c3\u00a9rences, il fait allusion au rituel qui consiste \u00c3\u00a0 briser les guitares \u00c3\u00a9lectriques dans les concerts de rock, il rappelle Fluxus et ses nombreuses destructions d&rsquo;instruments. C&rsquo;est aussi un road movie, faisant r\u00c3\u00a9f\u00c3\u00a9rence au paysage du Texas o\u00c3\u00b9 il a \u00c3\u00a9t\u00c3\u00a9 tourn\u00c3\u00a9, avec des r\u00c3\u00a9f\u00c3\u00a9rences aux cow-boys et aux rod\u00c3\u00a9os. Il s&rsquo;agit de la violence en g\u00c3\u00a9n\u00c3\u00a9ral et plus particuli\u00c3\u00a8rement du lynchage de James Byrd Jr. qui a \u00c3\u00a9t\u00c3\u00a9 tra\u00c3\u00aen\u00c3\u00a9 jusqu&rsquo;\u00c3\u00a0 la mort derri\u00c3\u00a8re un \u00e2\u20ac\u0153pickup-truck\u00e2\u20ac\u0153. Je souhaite que la vid\u00c3\u00a9o comporte ces multiples couches et d\u00c3\u00a9clenche l\u00e2\u20ac\u2122imagination des gens dans des directions contradictoires. La pi\u00c3\u00a8ce finit par \u00c3\u00aatre \u00c3\u00a0 la fois s\u00c3\u00a9duisante et r\u00c3\u00a9pugnante.<br \/>\n<em>Christian Marclay, 2001, notes de pochette de l&rsquo;\u00c3\u00a9dition vinyl publi\u00c3\u00a9e en 2006 par le label su\u00c3\u00a9dois Neon Records en 1500 exemplaires.<\/em>*<\/p>\n<p>Sortie en 2000, la vid\u00c3\u00a9o \u00ab\u00a0Guitar Drag\u00a0\u00bb a \u00c3\u00a9t\u00c3\u00a9 film\u00c3\u00a9e \u00c3\u00a0 San Antonio (Texas) le 18 novembre 1999.<\/p>\n<p>* <em>\u00ab\u00a0Guitar Drag has many different layers of references, it alludes to the ritual of smashing guitars in rock concerts, it recalls Fluxus and its many destruction of instruments. It is also a road movie, with reference to the landscape of Texas where it was filmed, with references to cowboys and rodeos. It is about violence in general and more specifically about the lynching of James Byrd Jr. who was dragged to his death behind a pickup-truck. I want the video to have these multiple layers and trigger people&rsquo;s imagination in contradictory ways.
